Children are constantly outgrowing their clothes, and this quickly turns into some very cluttered wardrobes. Spring is the perfect opportunity to declutter and change over the kids’ seasonal wardrobes and essentially kill two birds with one stone! Here are some of my tips on how to reshuffle and organise your child’s wardrobe for spring.
Timing
Plan the wardrobe reshuffle in advance and it’s best to do it after a big laundry day, so you have all the kid’s clean clothes available to you to either: put back in the wardrobe, store away for next season or donate to your local charity bin.
Get messy
Find a clear area in your house and get messy. Empty out the contents of your children’s wardrobe and place them in a pile in your decluttering space. It’s easier to declutter when everything is in front of you. The room may look like a bomb while you are decluttering – but you need to get messy before you can get clean!
Create piles
This is where the cleaning out and organising begins. Start off by creating sections in the room that will turn into piles for different needs. Here are some ideas of piles to help you get organised:
– No
– Maybe
– Later
– Keep
– Rags
No – these are the clothes you will not be keeping. There are so many children out there who need pre-loved clothes and this will be your donate/hand me downs pile. Clothes that are too small or feel too tight won’t fit your child next season, so best to give those away.
Maybe – these are clothes you think you might want to keep but not too sure about. Leave this pile until the end and revisit it once you have finished putting clothes in all the other sections.
Later – this is your keep pile for all the clothes that are not right for the incoming season but will be used again next season. For example, beanies and scarves are items that they won’t grow out of but will not be used during the warmer months.
Keep – this is for all the chameleon clothes. The clothes that can be used throughout each of the seasons.
Rags or Messy Clothes – this pile is for the clothes that may be tattered, a little bit stained or quite faded and not good enough to give away or use as a hand me down. You can use these clothes as cleaning rags or hold on to them for when your kid’s do messy activities like painting or playing in the mud kitchen.
Clean the sections
You have organised your sections, so what now?
No – bundle these up and take it to your favourite charity or family friend that would benefit from hand me down clothes.
Maybe – holding on to clothes that you aren’t sure about can often clutter your life. You don’t want to put these back into the children’s wardrobe but you aren’t sure if you should give them away just yet. My tip here is to choose an amount of time to store them for and if you don’t miss them after that period of time, then it is time to give them away. Hire A Box has a great box hire service that is quite handy in these situations. They will deliver boxes to you and pick them up as an easy storage solution for up to 3 months. And if you need longer than 3 months, then you can buy them! However, three months is a perfect amount of time to then have another look through the clothes and decide what to do with them.
Later – pack up these clothes and pop them away in your usual storage solutions. You can also hire boxes for this step as well, three months is a season so if that is as long as you want to store the clothes then Hire A Box is perfect for you.
Keep – fold or hang these clothes and pop them back in the wardrobe.
Rags or Messy Clothes – rags can go to the cleaning cupboard and messy clothes can sit with the kid’s art and craft area.
